#25 Brown Extends Unbeaten Streak to Eight GamesProvidence, R.I. - Three different Bears found the back of the net as Brown (8-0, 1-0) defeated the visiting Ramblers (5-6, 0-1) of Loyola-Chicago 3-0 in a non-conference contest at Stevenson Field Sunday afternoon.
After nearly a half of scoreless action, senior Raffaella Kalishman (Wilton, CT/Wilton) scored her first collegiate goal to get the Bears on the board with just over five minutes remaining in the first half. Junior Laura Iden (Kenilworth, NJ/Union Catholic) threw the ball in to Kim Lanzire (Bristol, RI/Mt. Hope), who promptly flicked it backwards and up over her head to a waiting Kalishman. Kalishman, the eighth Bear to score this season, headed the ball straight back into the net as Brown took a 1-0 lead into half time.
In the 72nd minute, freshman Kristin Ferrell (Concorde, MA/Concord-Carlisle) added an insurance goal for the Bears. As Loyola's keeper, Erica Pedini (Plano, TX/Plano), came out to get a ball that had been crossed by Brown senior Bekah Splaine (Cambridge, MA/Buckingham, Browne & Nichols), the ball slipped past Pedini. Ferrell, waiting in the middle, became the ninth Bear to score this season as she fired it into the empty net for her first collegiate goal.
Brown put the game away with just 49 seconds remaining as senior Michaela Rooney (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich) served the ball into the box and junior Allyson Schwerdt (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) headed it in for the third Brown goal.
The Brown defense, led by the goalkeeping tandem of junior Mary Jo Markle (West Chester, PA/Henderson) and freshman Sarah Gervais (Harrisville, RI/Mt. St. Charles Academy), has not been scored upon in 401:18, dating back to the 2-1 victory at Fairfield on September 13. Gervais made all three Brown saves, while Pedini stopped 16 Brown shots for the Ramblers, as Brown outshot Loyola 33-7.
The Bears, ranked 25th in the country and 3rd in the Northeast Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, will end their five-game homestand as they host Columbia in an Ivy League contest on Friday, October 6, at 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson Field.
