After 95:15 of scoreless action, Brown thought it had the victory sealed when senior co-captain Bekah Splaine (Cambridge, MA/Buckingham, Browne & Nichols) booted the ball into the back of the net for what would have been her second game-winner in as many games. However, the Holy Cross goalkeeper, Tiffany DeCoff (Danvers, MA/Danvers) had possession of the ball prior to the goal and it was called back.
With 9:45 remaining in the first overtime, neither team let up, as each squad took three shots during the 15 minute span, but as the first overtime expired, the score was still 0-0.
Brown, hungry for its sixth shutout in seven games and eager to remain undefeated, got the break it was looking for all night just 15 seconds into the second overtime. Sophomore Amy Albro (Seattle, WA/Lakeside) passed the ball to Splaine, who beat her defender and carried the ball up the right side. Carey received the cross at the far post and fired the ball in to the low opposite corner.
The Brown defense, led by the goalkeeping tandem of junior Mary Jo Markle (West Chester, PA/Henderson) and freshman Sarah Gervais (Harrisville, RI/Mt. St. Charles Academy), has not been scored upon in 311:18, dating back to the 2-1 victory at Fairfield on September 13. Markle and Gervais combined for eight saves while DeCoff made 11 saves for the Crusaders as Brown outshot Holy Cross 23-15.
The Bears, ranked 25th in the country and 3rd in the Northeast Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, will continue their five-game homestand as they host Loyola (Chicago) on Sunday October 1 at 1:00 p.m. at Stevenson Field.
