NEW HAVEN, CT - The Yale women's soccer team (10-6, 4-2) broke open a 1-1 game with two second-half goals to earn a 3-1 victory over the Brown women's soccer team (6-9-1, 3-3-0), ending the Bears' chances for a 13th Ivy League title. Yale, which moves into a two-way tie for second place with Princeton, can still earn a share of the 2007 Title along with Penn (5-1) and Princeton (4-2), but Penn is assured the Ivy automatic bid for the 2007 NCAA Tournament by virtue of its victories over both Yale and Princeton. Brown, now tied for fourth with Harvard at 3-3-0 in the League can still fininsh as high as third with a win next Saturday against Dartmouth.
However, just 2:27 later, Yale tied the game at 1-1 when Maggie Westfall slipped the ball past sophomore Steffi Yellin (Savannah, GA). The score remained knotted at one through the end of the first half, but Becky Brown scored what would prove to be the game-winner 13:49 into the second stanza.
The Bulldogs added their third goal with less than 14 minutes remaining for the 3-1 final.
Yale held a 13-10 advantage in shots and each team earned two corner kicks. Yellin finished the game with four saves. The Bears return to action on Saturday, November 10, when they host Dartmouth at 7:00 p.m. The contest is the final game of the 2007 season and marks senior day for the seven members of the Class of 2008; Kate Ashforth (New Canaan, CT), co-captain Kerrilynn Carney (North Smithfield, RI), Anne Friedland (Toronto, ONT), Susie Keller (Cincinnati, OH), Mollie Mattuchio (Pepperell, MA), Andrea Pagnanelli (Huntington Beach, CA), and co-captain Julia Shapira (Los Angeles, CA).
