PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown University women's soccer team (5-9-2, 1-3-2) battled the University of Pennsylvania (8-5-3, 2-2-2) in an Ivy League women's soccer contest on Sunday afternoon at Stevenson Field, but fell to the Quakers, 1-0, the ninth one-goal loss of the season for the Bears. The game marked the final home contest for the seven members of the class of 2006: Robin Averbeck (Fond du Lac, WI), Jamie Johnson (North Kingstown, RI), Kim LaVere (Chatsworth, CA), Tory Manchester (Costa Mesa, CA), and tri-captains Meghan Schreck (Hudson, MA), Christine Serdjenian (Waterville, ME), and Hilary Wilson (Monterey, CA).
The pace of the play was fast from the opening whistle with most of the action happening in the midfield, as neither team registered a shot during the first 10:00 of the game. The Quakers, however, took advantage of their first corner kick of the contest, to take a 1-0 lead at 9:54. Tracy Bienenfeld served the ball into the box, straight to the head of Rachel Fletcher, who headed the ball across the goal-mouth. The ball found the head of Natlie Capuano, who headed the ball past Wilson from point blank range.
The Bears nearly tied the game at 1-1 with 10 seconds left in the half when freshman Jamie Mize (Washington, DC) and junior Mica Bayard (Princeton, MA) generated a great run down the field. However, after one shot from each of them was blocked, and with the Penn goalie still down, the Bears were unable to get a third shot off as time expired.
Brown dominated the second half, outshooting Penn, 9-6, but could not get past the Penn defense. The Bears faced some tough luck with under three minutes left to play when a shot from sophomore Kerrilynn Carney (North Smithfield, RI) hit the cross bar, seconds after freshman leading scorer Lindsay Cunningham (Cumberland, RI) beat the Penn keeper with a low shot, but the ball trickled just outside of the net.
Wilson recorded seven saves for Brown, including four in the second half. The Bears wrap up the 2005 season next Saturday when they face Ivy League leading Yale in a 7:00 p.m. contest in New Haven.
