Women's Soccer Drops Heartbreaking 2-1 Overtime Decision to #22 Hartford
Oct. 15, 2002
PROVIDENCE, RI - The 22nd ranked University of Hartford (8-4) scored the game-winning goal with just 32 seconds left in the first overtime en route to a 2-1 victory over Brown (5-5-2) in a northeast regional women's soccer contest Tuesday evening at Stevenson Field.
After nearly an entire half of scoreless action, the Bears took a 1-0 lead on a set play with their only shot of the half. Freshman Kim LaVere (Chatsworth, CA) served the ball in from the top of the circle, finding junior Michaela Sewall (Newton, MA) to the right of the penalty box. She quickly passed the ball to senior Laura Iden (Kennilworth, NJ), who headed the ball past Hartford's Heather Hinton for her team-leading fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 Brown lead at the 42:53 mark.
The Hawks knotted the score at 1-1 at the 62:34 mark, despite several Brown chances to take a 2-0 lead. However, Brown junior goalie Sarah Gervais (Harrisville, RI) and the rest of the defense played strong for the remaining 27:26, forcing overtime, Brown's fifth overtime game of the season and second in a row.
With the contest appearing to be headed into a second 10-minute overtime session, Hartford's Malin Engman took Gervais one-on-one and slipped the game-winner into the net with just 32 seconds left. Sandra Kayulu tallied Hartford's first goal.
In net, Gervais finished with 11 saves for the Bears, while Hinton stopped three shots for Hartford.
Brown continues action on Saturday, October 19th, when it travels to New Jersey for a 4:00 p.m. Ivy League contest against the Princeton Tigers at Princeton.
