Bears Drop Ivy Opener, 1-0, to Dartmouth
Sept. 24, 2005
PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown University women's soccer team (4-5-0, 0-1-0) battled Dartmouth (6-2-0, 1-0-0) for 90:00, but came up short as the Bears fell to the Big Green, 1-0, in the 2005 Ivy opener for both squads.
With the one-goal defeat, Brown has dropped all five of its losses by just one goal this season, including four 1-0 losses, two of which came in double overtime.
Dartmouth dominated play from the opening whistle, settling in on the attack for the majority of the first half, but it was Brown that took the first shot on goal less than 10:00 into the game. Though Dartmouth controlled the pace of the first half, the Bears' defense kept the Big Green from taking a shot on goal until the 27th minute. However, at 28:32, Megan Wijas capitalized on just its second shot of the night, as Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead with 16:28 left in the first half.
Sarah Johnson took an indirect kick for Dartmouth just outside of the box, and as the ball was sailing across the goalmouth, Wijas tapped it into the near corner.
Brown played more aggressively in the second half, and generated several scoring chances midway through the half, but shots from sophomore Susie Keller (Cincinnati, OH) and senior Meghan Schreck (Hudson, MA) both sailed wide, as Dartmouth was able to escape with the win.
Senior Hilary Wilson (Monterey, CA) stopped five shots in net for Brown, which will look to rebound next Friday, September 30, when it takes on Columbia at 7:30 p.m. in New York.
