Sept. 18, 2002
PROVIDENCE, RI - Freshman Kim LaVere's (Chatsworth, CA) goal midway through the first half proved to be all the Bears would need, as Brown (3-1-1) defeated the University of Rhode Island (3-2-1), 1-0, in a non-conference game Wednesday evening at Stevenson Field.
After nearly 22 minutes of scoreless action, freshman Tory Manchester (Costa Mesa, CA) found LaVere in the midfield and LaVere dribbled in before firing a 35-yard lofted shot over URI's keeper. The goal, which proved to be the game-winner, came at the 21:16 mark of the first half, and Brown never looked back.
The goal, which was the rookies first of her young career, was enough for the victory, Brown's second shutout in three games, as junior Sarah Gervais (Harrisville, RI) and the rest of the Brown team shutdown the Rams' offense.
With an eight-save performance, Gervais also picked up her first career shutout, as Brown won its third straight contest.
The Bears continue action on Saturday evening when they host League rival Columbia at 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson Field in Brown's 2002 Ivy opener.
