PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown University women's soccer team (3-3-0) battled ninth-ranked Boston College (5-0-0) for 90:00, but could not play the role of the spoiler as the Eagles prevailed, 1-0. It was Boston College's fifth straight shutout victory as the Eagles have not been scored upon yet this season. Brown's defense was able to stymie BC's attack somewhat, as the Eagles have scored twice in their other four games.
The Bears put together a solid effort against the Eagles and nearly scored the first goal of the game when junior Jill Mansfield (East Windsor, NJ) dribbled down the right flank and took a low shot at the opposite corner. Her shot was saved, but the ball deflected out to freshman Emily Geldwert (Larchmont, NY), whose shot was saved on the goal line by BC's Tara Luciani.
Boston College then had a chance to score with under 40:00 left in the game, but Jenny Mauer's shot from outside the box was saved by senior Kim LaVere (Chatsworth, CA) on the goal line.
The Eagles broke the scoreless tie at 64:39 when Kia McNeill crossed the ball to Nicole Reyes at the far post, and Reyes fired the ball past a diving Hilary Wilson (Chatsworth, CA).
Mansfield nearly tied the game at 1-1 with 15:05 left to play, but her shot from just outside the box ricocheted off the crossbar as Brown was unable to net the equalizer.
Wilson recorded six saves in net for Brown, while Arianna Criscione made two saves for Boston College. The Bears travel cross country this weekend for a two-game West Coast swing, where they will face Pacific on Friday, September 16, and UC Davis on Sunday, September 18.
