Sept. 5, 2003

Providence, RI - The Brown women's soccer team kicked off the 2003 season with a 0-0 double overtime tie against the University of Vermont on Friday Sept. 5 at Stevenson Field. The Bears dominated the game, recording 30 shots compared to the Catamounts 11.

Brown opened the first half with sophomore Meghan Schreck (Hudson, MA) and senior Kristin Ferrell (Concord, MA) both leading the Bears' attack and keeping the ball predominately in Brown's offensive end. Sophomore Robin Averbeck (Fond du Lac, WI) along with sophomore Kim LaVere (Chatsworth, CA) were instrumental on the Bears' defense, stifling the Catamounts attack throughout the game.

The second half of the game was, again dominated by the Bears' midfield and attack. Freshman Jill Mansfield (East Windsor, NJ) and senior Julie Herrold (La Crescenta, CA) were key in setting up Schreck and senior Michaela Sewall (Newton, MA) for numerous attempts on Vermont's goal. Freshman Jill Mansfield's (East Windsor, NJ) powerful gymnastic-style throw-ins captivated the Stevenson's capacity crowd, while also setting up many near goal opportunities. The Bears ended regulation time still in a 0-0 tie.

The first overtime period continued to stay in the Bears offensive end. Freshman Kathryn Moos (Wayzata, MN) and sophomore Kara Aurbach (Manalapan, NJ) lead Brown's relentless shots on Vermont's starting goalie Katie Duffy. The second overtime period was much like the first, in that Vermont saw only a few chances of the ball in Brown's defensive end. Despite Brown's 30 shots on the night to Vermont's 11, the Bears were unable to capitalize through two overtime periods and ended the game tied at 0-0. The Bears record is now 0-0-1 and Vermont's record moves to 2-0-1.

Senior goalkeeper Sarah Gervais (Harrisville, RI) recorded four saves in net for Brown. Duffy made 20 saves in net for Vermont.
