Bears Drop Season-Opener to UNH, 1-0, in Double Overtime
Sept. 2, 2005
DURHAM, NH - The Wildcats scored a golden goal midway through the second overtime session to lift the University of New Hampshire (2-1) to a 1-0 non-conference victory over the Brown women's soccer team (0-1) in the Bears' 2005 season opener at Bremner Field.
Following 90 minutes of scoreless play in regulation, the first 10-minute overtime session also ended with the score tied at 0-0. The Wildcats began to carry play in the first extra session and continued to do so in the second overtime frame.
In the 102nd minute, a 28-yard direct kick by UNH was blasted into the defensive wall in front and moments later a 20-yard shot through traffic bounced to Brown senior goalkeeper Hilary Wilson (Monterey, CA).
Less than three minutes later, the Wildcats scored the game-winner, ending the marathon in the 106th minute with a low shot that landed in the middle of the net.
There was a lot of choppy play in regulation, during which the teams combined for 38 fouls. Brown had better ball possession during regulation, but only recorded an 11-10 shot advantage. The Bears were then outshot 6-0 in overtime.
One of Brown's most dangerous scoring opportunities occurred in the 27th minute, when sophomore Whitney Clark's (Eugene, OR) direct kick from 25 yards on the left wing bent back to the left post, but the UNH goalie made a diving save to keep the Bears off the board.
Wilson finished the night with six saves for the Bears, who continue action on Sunday, September 4, when they host Sacred Heart at 2:00 p.m. in their 2005 home-opener on Stevenson Field.
