Waldman’s Hat Trick Leads Women’s Soccer to 4-0 Win over Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior Mikela Waldman scored three goals for her first career hat trick as Brown University women's soccer topped the University of Hartford, 4-0, on Thursday night at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium.

The Bears (3-0-0) held a 3-0 lead at the half and went ahead 4-0 in the 48th minute to defeat the host Hawks (0-3-1) and to start the season with three straight wins for the first time since 2011.

Waldman (San Francisco, Calif.) found the back of the net in the 12th, 23rd, and 48th minutes in her first career multi-goal game. She scored in back-to-back games for the first time in her career and pushed her career goal total to nine goals.

Making her season debut, sophomore Abby Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) netted her second career goal in the 34th minute. Junior Jennifer Caruso (Brockton, Mass.) posted two assists for her first career multi-assist game. Freshman Star White (Norfolk, Va.) tallied her second assist of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made three saves in the win (3-0-0), playing 84:01. She combined for the shutout with senior Rylee Shumway (Los Angeles, Calif.) who made one stop in the final 5:59.

On the game's first goal at 11:10, senior Katy Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.) sent a long throw from the right side into the penalty area where a waiting Waldman chipped a header over the goalkeeper.

Waldman pushed the Bears' edge to 2-0 at 22:14 as Caruso won the ball on the right wing, attacked the goal, and fed a pass to Waldman who tapped home a goal from the edge of the six-yard box.

Carchio gave the visitors a 3-0 advantage at 33:39. After White settled a ball in the box and beat a defender along the end line, she slid a pass out to Carchio who drove a shot into the back of the net from 12 yards out.

Waldman completed her hat trick and the game's scoring at 47:25 as Caruso beat the defense along the left side and setup Waldman inside the goal area for the second time.

The Bears' starting back four of Schmidt, junior Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.), and freshmen Sydney Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.) and Cameron Brown (Portsmouth, Va.) aided in Brown's first shutout of the year.

For the match, Brown led in shots (13-11) and shots on goal (8-4) while Hartford gained a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
