Lane’s 85th Minute Goal Lifts Women’s Soccer Over Cornell, 1-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Amanda Lane scored in the 85th minute off a corner kick from freshman Abby Carchio to lift Brown University women's soccer to a 1-0 win over Cornell University at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Bears (8-2-4, 3-1-1 Ivy) pulled out the win over the visiting Big Red (2-8-2, 1-3-1 Ivy) as Lane (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) netted her first goal of the season and Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) tallied her third assist in as many games.

"You have to have patience in games like this," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "Cornell defends very well, and we knew that was something that we were going to be up against. We generated some opportunities, especially towards the end of the match. I was just happy that we could put one away."

On Brown's seventh corner kick of the second half, Carchio sent a ball in from the right side, and Lane finished off the play with a shot from the back post inside the goal area at 84:05.

Brown sophomore goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) recorded her ninth shutout of the season in the win (8-2-4). The NCAA's leader in save percentage, Etzel moved into a tie for second place on the Bears' single-season shutout list. Her 13 career shutouts give her sole possession of fourth place on Brown's career shutout ledger.

The Bears created the better of the game's chances, holding advantages in shots (11-6), shots on goal (6-0), and corner kicks (7-2).

The hosts applied pressure on the Big Red in the latter moments of the second half, earning six corners and placing three shots on goal between the 69th and the 85th minutes.

In the 81st minute, senior Carly Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) put a shot on goal from close range off a corner kick, forcing another corner for the Bears. Freshman Terri Wilken (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) drove a shot on goal inside the penalty area on the ensuing corner, requiring a diving save.

Cornell threatened twice in the match with a bending shot from Grace Keller glancing off the crossbar in the 56th minute and with a header from Jessica Ritchie carrying just over the bar in the 85th minute.

Cornell goalie Meghan Kennedy made five saves in the loss (2-3-2).

Next, Brown plays at Penn on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 5:00 p.m.
