WORCESTER, Mass. – Goals from senior Carly Gould, junior Katy Schmidt, and sophomore Celia Story gave Brown University women's soccer a 3-2 win over Holy Cross on Tuesday night at Smith Soccer Stadium.
In their final non-conference game of the season, the Bears (7-2-3) held leads of 1-0, 2-1, and 3-1 before closing out the victory against the host Crusaders (2-9-2) and tying a season high with three goals.
Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) put Brown on the board in the 9th minute before Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.) netted her first career goal in the 41st minute to provide the visitors a 2-1 halftime edge. Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) scored the game-winning goal for the second time in as many outings, finding the back of the net in the 64th minute.
Freshman Abby Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) posted her first two collegiate assists in the contest while Gould finished the match with a game-high three points on a goal and an assist.
Less than 10 minutes into the contest, Gould scored her third goal of the season and the 14th of her career, running onto a through ball along the right side from Carchio off a pass from sophomore Jennifer Caruso (Brockton, Mass.) and placing a shot into the goal from just inside the penalty area at 8:13.
Holy Cross drew level at 1-1 in the 32nd minute as Andj Seslija sent a glancing header off a corner kick from Carly Flahive from the right side into the goal at 31:41.
Schmidt pushed Brown back into the lead at 2-1 with her first collegiate goal at the 40:11 mark. After a touch pass from junior Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Gould sent an arcing pass to the back post where a waiting Schmidt headed the ball into the net from inside the 6-yard box.
In the second half, Story posted her sixth career goal and third tally of the season at 63:31 to make the score 3-1. Junior Sarah Cobb (North Tustin, Calif.) sent a centering pass to Carchio who threaded a pass to Story before she slotted a shot into the right side of the goal from the top of the penalty area.
The Crusaders concluded the match's scoring in the 66th minute as a ball into the mixer from Lucy Acuna deflected into the net at 65:49 bringing the hosts within 3-2.
In her first action of the season, Brown junior goalkeeper Rylee Shumway (Los Angeles, Calif.) made eight saves in the second half. Sophomore goalie Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) turned aside one shot in the first half in the win (7-2-3).
Holy Cross net-minder Brooke Holle (1-4-2) stopped four shots in the loss.
For the match, Holy Cross held advantages in shots (20-11), shots on goal (11-7), and corner kicks (11-5). The Crusaders became the first team this season to score more than one goal against the Bears.
Brown – ranked No. 7 in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings – improved to 14-3-4 all-time against Holy Cross.
