PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's soccer generated four shots and three corner kicks in the final 20 minutes, but Casey Estey's goal in the 67th minute stood up as Providence College took a 1-0 win on Thursday night at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
The Bears (2-1-1) outshot the Friars (4-2-1) in the second half, 8-6, and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks in the second 45 minutes, but the hosts emerged with the victory in the crosstown rivalry.
Sophomore goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made three saves as her shutout streak to open the season concluded at 356:38 minutes.
Kristyn Shea (4-2-1) stopped four shots for the Friars in her fourth shutout of the season. PC improved to 4-0-0 in its last four matches and has outscored its opponents 9-0 during that streak.
Etzel dealt soundly with all of the Friars' attacking chances in the first half, including making a diving save to her left in the 14th minute. She punched away a pair of PC crosses to keep the hosts off the board.
Junior Mikela Waldman (San Francisco, Calif.) placed Brown's one shot on goal in the first half, striking a ball on target from the right side on a counter attack in the 40th minute.
In the second half, sophomore Megan Grant (Carlsbad, Calif.) sent a shot just wide left from the inside of the box in the 48th minute, and senior Carly Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) drove a shot just over the bar from 30 yards out in the 63rd minute.
Estey netted the game-winning goal at the 66:38 mark as she ran onto a through ball and slotted a shot into the left side of the goal in a 1-v-1 with Etzel. Juliana Pellegrini and Kayla Steeves recorded assists on the play.
Brown created multiple opportunities in the final 20 minutes with Gould taking consecutive threatening shots in the 71st and 72nd minutes. The Bears earned corner kicks in the 73rd, 83rd, and 88th minutes, but the Friars cleared each attempt. Etzel made a final save in the 90th minute to give Brown one final chance.
For the match, Brown held a 9-3 edge in corner kicks, both teams landed four shots on goal, and PC led 13-9 in shots.
Providence – ranked No. 7 in the NSCAA Northeast Regional rankings – moved to 8-20-0 in the all-time series with Brown – ranked No. 10 in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings – as the Friars have won the last four meetings in the series.
Next, Brown plays at Lafayette College on Sunday at 1 p.m. prior to hosting Massachusetts at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.
