Women’s Soccer Tops Stony Brook on Carchio Goal, 1-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Abby Carchio scored her first career goal, sophomore goalkeeper Christine Etzel posted her third shutout in as many games, and Brown University women's soccer beat Stony Brook University, 1-0, in a Sunday matinee at Stevenson-Pincince Field.

The Bears (2-0-1) have yet to concede a goal this season and edged the visiting Seawolves (1-4-1) on a goal off a corner in the 31st minute from Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.).

"It's impressive that we've gone three straight games with shutouts," head coach Kia McNeill said. "There are not a lot of teams in the country that are sitting on three shutouts. It's a huge testament to our defense and to Christine Etzel for keeping a clean sheet out there."

Junior Sarah Cobb (North Tustin, Calif.) tallied her second career assist on the game's lone goal as she sent a corner kick in from the right side where an opportunistic Carchio headed the ball into the back of the net from the middle of the goal area.

Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made two diving saves to extend her shutout streak to 290 minutes to open the season. She recorded a clean sheet for the seventh time in her career and for the third time this season in the win (2-0-1).

Brown's defensive contributors to the shutout comprised a back line that included juniors Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Katy Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.), sophomores Megan Grant (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.), freshman Abby Kaplan (Potomac, Md.), and senior Jaclyn Alois (Andover, Mass.) as well as Cobb in a defensive midfielder role.

For Stony Brook, net-minder Cara Gallagher (1-1-0) turned aside three shots.

The Bears generated the better of the first half's chances as senior Carly Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.), who posted a game-high four shots, sent a shot over the bar in the 1st minute, and sophomore Amanda Lane (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) placed a shot on frame in the 45th minute.

Etzel proved up to the task on the Seawolves' strongest scoring opportunity as the visitors took three shots in succession around the 56th minute. Etzel dove to stop an initial shot from Manuela Corcho before Raven Edwards hit the crossbar, and Corcho sent a follow-up attempt above the woodwork.

Brown's second-year keeper made another diving save to her right in the 81st minute while the Bears kept Gallagher at attention with a high shot from freshman Veronica Alois (Andover, Mass.) in the 64th minute and a second shot on goal from Lane in the 85th minute.

Brown held an advantage in shots (11-6) and shots on goal (4-2) while both teams attempted seven corners. The Bears held the Seawolves without a shot in the first half in the first meeting between the two programs.

Next, Brown plays at Providence College on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. and at Lafayette College on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m.
