Women’s Soccer Defeats Rhode Island in Season Opener, 3-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Carly Gould, sophomore Celia Story, and junior Maclaine Lehan each scored a goal, sophomore goalkeeper Christine Etzel posted a shutout, and Brown University women's soccer defeated the University of Rhode Island, 3-0, in its season and home opener at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Sunday afternoon.

Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) netted her goal in the first half while Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) each added a tally in the second half as the Bears (1-0-0) gained separation from the visiting Rams (0-1-2).

"It's a great result," first-year head coach Kia McNeill said. "Getting the shutout is great and then scoring three goals on the offensive end is really impressive for this group. I'm just really proud of the team and the work that they put in."

Gould finished with a game-high four points on a goal and a career-best two assists. Lehan registered the first points of her career, notching the Bears' third goal and tacking on an assist on the team's first goal.

Junior Mikela Waldman (San Francisco, Calif.) tied a career high with two assists while freshman Veronica Alois (Andover, Mass.) posted her first career assist in her collegiate debut.

Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made two saves in the win (1-0-0), earning the fifth clean sheet of her career. Brown's back four of Lehan, junior Katy Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.), and sophomores Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.), and Megan Grant (Carlsbad, Calif.) aided in the shutout.

URI netminder Katie Nickles stopped three shots in the loss (0-1-2).

The Bears controlled play in the opening 15 minutes and struck for the first goal as Gould found the back of the net in the 9th minute for her 12th career goal and seventh marker in the last six games dating back to last season. Lehan played a free kick along the right side before Waldman sent a cross into the box that Gould finished along the edge of the goal area.

Still leading 1-0 entering the second half, Story doubled Brown's advantage to 2-0 in the 50th minute on her fourth career goal. After Waldman sent a cross in from the right side, Gould kept the ball alive in the box, and Story slotted the ball across the goal line.

Lehan gave the Bears insurance in the 71st minute as she netted her first career goal. After a corner kick from Phillips, Lehan pounced on a rebound in the goal area after Nickles saved the initial shot from Gould off a pass from Alois.

Etzel made key plays in each half to maintain the shutout, coming off her line to smother a breakaway in the 41st minute and making a diving save in the 73rd minute.

Next, Brown plays at Buffalo on Thursday at 7 p.m. before hosting Stony Brook on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 11 a.m. on ILDN.TV.
