Gould’s Three Goals Fuel Women’s Soccer to 4-0 Win over Marist

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Carly Gould scored three times in the first half, and senior Jillian DeSimone netted a goal early in the second half to fuel Brown University women's soccer to a 4-0 win over Marist College on Monday afternoon at Stevenson Field.

"The players took the game into their own hands. They knew what they needed to do and got it done," 39th-year head coach Phil Pincince said. "I'm glad that we got to play all the players. I thought it was a great team win heading into a good week of training."

Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) posted the second hat trick for the Bears (4-6-2) in a three-week span as senior Erin Katz (Montgomery, Ala.) scored three goals against Sacred Heart on Sept. 23. DeSimone (Lincoln, R.I.) assisted on Gould's first goal to compile three points on the day.

Junior Sydney Calas (Bethesda, Md.) and freshman Megan Grant (Carlsbad, Calif.) each tallied two assists in the game while freshmen Jennifer Caruso (Brockton, Mass.) and Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) added one assist apiece to help the hosts upend the visiting Red Foxes (5-8-1).

Backstopping the Bears, freshman Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) and sophomore Rylee Shumway (Los Angeles, Calif.) combined to notch Brown's fourth shutout as a team this season with Etzel making three saves, including a stop on a penalty kick.

Gould opened the game's scoring in the 10th minute as she made a near post run into the goal area and headed home a corner kick from DeSimone.

On her next shot, Gould doubled the Bears lead to 2-0 in the 12th minute as she again used her head – this time converting on a cross into the goal area from the left wing from Calas after a setup pass from Caruso.

Etzel kept momentum on the Bears' side in the 20th minute as she dove low and to her left to deny a penalty kick from the Red Foxes.

In the 42nd minute, Gould recorded her third goal on her third shot of the day, finishing off a cross into the goal area from the left side from Story with Grant also providing a helper on the play.

Brown pushed its lead to 4-0 in the 50th minute as Calas threw a ball into Grant who lofted a ball into the box where DeSimone ran onto it and slotted a shot into the back of the net.

Etzel helped the Bears maintain the clean sheet in the 66th minute as she extended herself to her right to snatch a shot off a deflection.

Next, Brown returns to Ivy League play at Harvard on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 1:30 p.m.
