NEW YORK, N.Y. – Brown University women's soccer remained in a deadlock with Columbia University for over 89 minutes, but Emma Anderson scored in the 90th minute to give the host Lions a 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon at Commisso Soccer Stadium.
The Bears (3-5-2, 0-1-1 Ivy), who had not allowed a goal in either of their previous two contests, kept the Lions (5-5-0, 1-1-0 Ivy) off the board until Anderson netted her tally at 89:31.
On the game's decisive play, Anderson controlled a ball from Elly McGuffog at the top of the penalty area, turned, and tucked a shot just inside the left post.
Brown sophomore goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made three saves in the setback (3-4-2). Her time elapsed without surrendering a goal – which spanned four matches and included a pair of 110-minute, double-overtime clean sheets – ended at 315:10.
Columbia net-minder Allison Spencer turned aside four shots in the win (4-4-0).
Brown controlled play in the second half, holding advantages in shots (15-4) and corner kicks (7-0). For the match, the Bears led 20-11 in shots and 10-3 in corners.
The Bears threatened in the 70th minute as Calas sent a menacing shot on frame from the left wing, which Spencer just managed to brush away. Freshman Jennifer Caruso (Brockton, Mass.) followed up the rebound with a shot inside the goal area, but Spencer again managed to knock the attempt away.
Next, Brown hosts Princeton (Sat., Oct. 10, 3:30 p.m.) and Marist (Mon., Oct. 12, 2 p.m.) over Columbus Day weekend.
