Women’s Soccer Earns Point in 0-0 Draw with Dartmouth in Ivy Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman goalkeeper Christine Etzel made seven saves as Brown University women's soccer earned a point in a 0-0 draw with Dartmouth College on Sunday afternoon at Stevenson Field in the Ivy League opener for both schools.

The Bears (3-4-1, 0-0-1 Ivy) battled the Big Green (6-1-2, 0-0-1 Ivy) – a side that received votes in the latest NSCAA Poll and came into the match outscoring its opponents 24-4 – for 110 minutes with both teams generating scoring chances in all four periods.

"I thought both Brown and Dartmouth gave 150 percent," 39th-year head coach Phil Pincince said. "It was a strong Ivy opener for us, for both teams. We brought it for 110 minutes – they brought it for 110 minutes."

Etzel (Madison, Conn.) garnered her second shutout of the season and improved to 3-3-1 on the year while Dartmouth goalie Casey Cousineau (5-1-2) stopped four shots in her second clean sheet of the year.

Brown threatened in the second overtime session as a header from senior Jillian DeSimone (Lincoln, R.I.) went just wide off a ball from freshman back Megan Grant (Carlsbad, Calif.). Each side placed a shot on goal in the final five minutes before the buzzer.

In the first bonus session, Etzel parried away a low shot in the 99th minute to keep the game scoreless.

The Bears almost broke through in the 90th minute as a free-kick attempt from junior Carly Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) went into the Big Green wall, and a follow-up shot from freshman Amanda Lane (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) required a second block.

Both sides made bids midway through the second half as a shot from freshman Jennifer Caruso (Brockton, Mass.) in the 64th minute needed an extended save from Cousineau, and Etzel reached out to stop a shot on a Dartmouth counter in the 75th minute.

The hosts pressured the visitors in the 53rd and 54th minutes as a shot from senior Erin Katz (Montgomery, Ala.) was blocked, a bid from Gould was knocked wide, and a shot from senior Sarah Moody (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) forced a save on the ensuing corner.

In the first half, DeSimone generated the Bears' best chance of the period with a shot just wide right in the 3rd minute, and Etzel made a diving stop on the Big Green's top opportunity in the first frame in the 43rd minute.

The two teams played to a draw for the second consecutive year after recording a 1-1 tie in 2014. Katz scored in the 89th minute for the Bears in the contest.

Next, Brown hosts Bryant on Wednesday at 7 p.m. prior to returning to Ivy League play at Columbia on Saturday at 4 p.m.
