Women’s Soccer Rallies Late, Falls to Providence, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Celia Story scored her first career goal in the 74th minute, and Brown University women's soccer created multiple chances to equalize before falling to Providence College, 2-1, on Thursday night at Stevenson Field.

The Bears (1-2-0) outshot the Friars (5-2-0), 14-5, in the second half, but their crosstown rivals held on for the win after netting two goals in the first half.

Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) brought life to the hosts in the final quarter hour as she found the back of the net from 10 yards out off a combination play inside the box along with junior Carly Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) and freshman Amanda Lane (Paradise Valley, Ariz.).

Brown almost knotted the score in the 79th minute as a header from senior Jillian DeSimone (Lincoln, R.I.) went just over the bar off a cross from Lane. The Bears threatened again in the 89th minute as Gould nearly found her way onto a header from senior Charlotte Beach (New Haven, Conn.).

Providence opened the scoring in the fifth minute as Rachel Ugolik finished off a ball inside the goal area after connecting passes from Casey Estey and Catherine Zimmerman.

The visitors extended their edge to 2-0 with just nine seconds remaining in the first half as Jill Clapp ran onto a through ball from Courtney Maguire on the left side after Kendall Andrew turned around an attempted clear from the Bears.

Brown freshman goalie Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made six saves in the setback (1-1-0) while PC net-minder Kristyn Shea (5-2-0) turned aside four shots in the win. The Bears now hold a 20-7-0 all-time record against the Friars.

The Bears threatened earlier in the second half with DeSimone driving a pair of crosses into the goal area. Etzel kept Brown within two goals in the 53rd minute as she came off her line and made a save on a PC breakaway.

All of Brown's point scorers also registered points in the Bears' first weekend of play as Story assisted on Lane's game-winning goal in the club's 2-1 win over St. John's, and Gould scored against Delaware. Gould generated Brown's best chance in the first half against the Friars, firing a shot on target that required a diving save from Shea in the 12th minute.

Next, Brown hosts Florida Atlantic on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Stevenson Field.
