Women’s Soccer Drops 6-1 Decision at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – Junior Carly Gould scored in the 33rd minute, but the University of Delaware netted three goals in both the first and second halves to defeat Brown University women's soccer, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.

The Bears (1-1-0) fell for the first time this season after opening up 2015 with a 2-1 win over St. John's on Friday night. Brown beat the Blue Hens (3-3-0) at home in Providence, R.I., last year in the only other meeting between the two sides.

Delaware's Riley Curtin led all players with five points on a goal and three assists while Natalie Zelenky recorded two goals, and Michelle McEnroe compiled a goal and an assist.

Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.), who scored the game-winning goal in Brown's 2-1 win over Delaware in 2014, pulled the Bears to within 2-1 in the 33rd minute as she drove a shot from over 20 yards out into the bottom right corner of the goal for her first tally of the season.

Curtin posted the game's first goal in the 19th minute, placing a shot from just outside the left part of the goal area inside the right post. Zelenky gave the hosts a 2-0 edge just under seven minutes later as she slotted a shot from 10 yards into the bottom right of the net off an assist from Curtin in the 26th minute.

Brown sophomore goalkeeper Rylee Shumway (Los Angeles, Calif.) made a pair of saves around the half hour mark allowing Gould to cut the visitors' deficit in half 32:37 into the contest. The Blue Hens went up 3-1 in the 41st minute as Krista Trinidad scored from the left of the penalty spot on an assist from McEnroe.

Delaware extended its edge to 4-1 early in the second half as Michelle Burnett finished off a cross from Curtin in the 47th minute. After Shumway made a pair of saves, McEnroe knocked a rebound into the net in the 52nd minute to give UD a 5-1 advantage. Zelenky scored the hosts' sixth goal in the 62nd minute.

Shumway (0-1-0) made a career-high nine saves in her second collegiate start while Delaware goalie Kailyn Rekos (3-3-0) stopped two shots in the win.

For the match, Delaware held advantages in shots (21-9), shots on goal (15-3), and corner kicks (6-1). Gould led Brown with four shots, three on goal, and sophomore Mikela Waldman (San Francisco, Calif.) added two shots.

Next, Brown hosts crosstown rival Providence College on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Bears then host Florida Atlantic on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m.
