PHILADELPHIA – Clara Midgley's goal in the fourth minute was all the Penn Quakers would need en route to a 2-0 victory over the Brown women's soccer team on Saturday at Rhodes Field.
The Bears (6-7-3, 1-3-2 Ivy) struggled to mount a sustained offensive attack on Saturday, as they were held to just eight shots, including just one in the opening 45 minutes.
Midgley's goal came off a scramble around the penalty dot as she corralled a loose ball and fired it past Brown goalkeeper Mallory Yant (Fenton, Mo.) just inside the left post to put Penn up 1-0.
With the Bears looking to head into the half just down one, the Quakers tallied a demoralizing second goal of the match off the foot of Kaitlyn Moore, who took a feed from Anna Estep and found the inside of the post for her second goal of the season to give Penn a 2-0 lead.
Forced to open up the attack, Brown pressured in the second half but could not solve Kalijah Terilli and the Quakers defense, as seniors Chloe Cross (Seattle, Wash.) and Allie Reilly (Lawrenceville, N.J.) each had their shots on goal denied. The stout Penn defense would not relent as the Quakers held on for the two-goal victory on their senior day.
Yant finished with three saves for the Bears while Terilli made two stops for Penn as they improved to 7-5-3 and 2-3-1 in Ivy play. Penn held a 9-8 edge in shots and a 4-2 margin in corner kicks. Cross, Kirsten Belinsky (Los Altos, Calif.), and Erin Katz (Montgomery, Ala.) each attempted two shots for the Bears on Saturday.
Brown will close out its season next weekend for a Friday night clash with Yale on Senior Night beginning at 7 p.m.
