PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Emily Mosbacher's goal in the 11th minute of play held up as the Harvard Crimson defeated the Brown women's soccer team by a score of 2-0 on Saturday night at Stevenson Field. The Bears drop to 5-6-3 and 0-2-2 in Ivy play while the Crimson improves to 8-3-2, 3-0-1 in league play with the win.
Reigning Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Year, Margaret Purce, highlighted the first half for the Crimson with five shots, including several near misses. Harvard grabbed an early lead in the 11th minute as Haley Washburn's corner kick was headed into the back of the cage by Emily Mosbacher for her fourth tally of the season.
Outshooting the Bears 13-2 in the opening frame, the Crimson continued to mount an attack, but Yant held strong as the Bears took the 1-0 deficit into the locker room.
Brown's best chances of knotting the game came 20 minutes into the second half as they stormed the Harvard end looking for the equalizer. Carly Gould's (Hampton Falls, N.H.) two consecutive attempts in a minute's span didn't find the target as Brown inched closer. Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) had Brown's best bid of the night as Annie Gillen's (San Clemente, Calif.) corner kick found the freshman's head, but spun just wide of the left post to keep the Crimson lead at one.
Kirsten Belinsky (Los Altos, Calif.) aimed to tie the game, but Emba smothered her blast from the left side. Harvard got the insurance marker they sought with just over three minutes to play as Meg Casscells sent Purce in on a breakaway and the sophomore tucked it past Yant to give Harvard the 2-0 lead they would not relinquish.
Harvard held a 24-8 edge in shots and an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks.
