SMITHFIELD, R.I. – First half goals from Carly Gould and Sydney Calas lifted the Brown women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Bryant on a rainy, raw Wednesday on Bulldog Soccer Field. Brown improves to 4-4-1 with the win while the Bulldogs drop to 2-9-0, suffering their fifth consecutive defeat.
Entering the game with only two combined goals scored in eight opening halves, the Bears matched that total in the first 39 minutes on Wednesday to jump out to a 2-0 lead after 45 minutes of play. Gould, the Hampton Falls, New Hampshire native, got Brown on the board in the 17th minute as she buried a punched out corner kick high into the netting above Conrad to put the Bears up 1-0.
Calas (Bethesda, Md.), a sophomore forward, gave the Bears some insurance in the 39th minute as she collected a loose ball off a corner and sent a lofting shot over the outstretched hand of Conrad to notch her first career goal.
The Bulldogs attempted to mount a comeback in the 62nd minute as they trimmed the deficit to one goal on Hannah Crofut's first tally of the season. Undaunted, the Bears responded minutes later to regain the two-goal lead thanks to Allie Reilly's (Lawrenceville, N.J.) lofting shot from the top of the box in the 69th minute. The goal was the senior midfielder's first tally since Sept. 2, 2011.
Despite Bulldog chances down the stretch, Shumway and the Bears defense kept Bryant off the scoreboard to salt away their fourth victory of the season. Bryant outshot the Bears 15-8 and held a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks. Brown's Erin Katz recorded the game's lone booking, a yellow card in the 88th minute.
Brown returns to action on Saturday with a home Ivy League match against Columbia beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Stevenson Field.
