HANOVER, N.H. – Junior midfielder Erin Katz's equalizer in the 89th minute helped the Brown women's soccer team salvage a 1-1 draw against Dartmouth on Sunday at Burnham Field. The Bears improve to 3-4-1, recording their first draw in eight games this season, while Dartmouth improves to 3-2-2 in the teams' Ivy League opener.
Brown goalkeeper Mallory Yant (Fenton, Mo.) made four stops and the Big Green's Tatiana Saunders also followed suit with four saves for the home team.
Dartmouth boasted the better of the play in the opening half as they outshot the Bears 9-2 and tallied what would seem like the game-winning marker in the 19th minute on Lucielle Kozlov's finish off a scrum. Bids by Katz (Montgomery, Ala.) and Chloe Cross (Seattle, Wash.) in the first half sailed wide, registering as Brown's only chances in the opening 45 minutes.
The Bears found their offensive groove in the second half and overtime, landing five shots on target, including their first shot on goal off the game off the foot of Cross in the 59th minute. Kozlov's early tally seemed destined to hold up until freshman Mikela Waldman (San Francisco, Calif.) created space on the right side of the box and crossed a perfect ball that Katz one-timed past Saunders to knot the game with 1:58 showing on the clock.
Brown had to bids to finish the game off in overtime, but just missed as Katz's chip from 18-yards out was stopped and Cross' free kick was barely tipped over the crossbar by Saunders to keep the game deadlocked.
The Big Green finished the game with a 17-8 advantage in shots and an 11-1 edge in corner kicks, while Cross was booked with the game's only yellow card in the 46th minute.
The Bears return to action on Wednesday as they travel to in-state rival Bryant beginning at 4 p.m.
