PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the second time in as many games, senior Kiersten Berg (Salt Lake City, Utah) scored a goal in the second half to break a scoreless tie as the Brown women's soccer team edged Bryant, 1-0, in non-league action Wednesday evening at Stevenson Field.
Brown (6-2-0) has won four straight, including three consecutive shutouts, while Bryant drops to 4-7-0 overall. Berg also scored the game-winner in Brown's 1-0 victory over Dartmouth to open Ivy League play on Sunday.
After a scoreless first half, Brown enjoyed a pair of scoring opportunities early in the second stanza as junior Chloe Cross (Seattle, Wash.) beat Bryant keeper Kaylan Conrad on the break but her shot just missed wide left of the net. One minute later, freshman Carly Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) was able to connect on a header, but the shot went right into the arms of Conrad.
Brown's persistence paid off, however, when Berg scored her second goal of the season in the 60th minute. After Cross sent a pass up the middle, Berg picked up the play and touched a shot to the left of the keeper as the ball rolled into the back of the net to give the home side the lead, 1-0.
After recording just one shot in the opening 45 minutes, Bryant rebounded with some pressure on the Bears, including a few chances shortly after the Brown goal. Bryant's best opportunity came with 23 minutes left to play when Rachael Ivanicki blasted a shot off the crossbar and Quinn Massaroni chipped the rebound wide left, but the Brown backline held tough the rest of the way to preserve the shutout.
Senior Amber Bledsoe (Cincinnati, Ohio) made one save in the first half, before giving way to senior MC Barrett (Ithaca, N.Y.) who posted three stops. Conrad made three saves for the Bulldogs in the second half, while Lauren Viverito played the first stanza and also made three saves. The Bears outshot the Bulldogs by a margin of 16-7.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5 when they visit Columbia at 7 p.m. Brown returns home on Saturday, Oct. 12 when they host Princeton at 4 p.m. in the first half of a doubleheader with the men's team.
