Women’s Soccer Takes Down UMass, 2-1
AMHERST, Mass. – Freshman Carly Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) scored midway through the first half and the Bears took advantage of a deflected corner early in the second stanza as the Brown women's soccer team downed UMass, 2-1, in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at Rudd Field.
Brown improves to 3-2-0 on the season while UMass moves to 2-5-1 overall.
Gould, who has started all five games as a rookie this season, put the Bears on top in the 18th minute. Junior Annie Gillen (San Clemente, Calif.) sent a corner kick into the center of the box, where Gould gained position and headed it home for her first tally of the season to put the visitors on top, 1-0.
UMass evened the contest with 1:22 left to play in the first half when Alyssa D'Arcy received a pass from Daniela Alvarez in transition and tipped a shot to the right of Brown keeper Amber Bledsoe (Cincinnati, Ohio) for the equalizer.
Brown struck back 1:12 into the second half to regain the lead. Junior Kirsten Belinsky (Los Altos, Calif.) took a corner kick and sent the ball just in front of the UMass net, but it was deflected off a defender and into the goal to push the Bears on top, 2-1. Brown limited the Minutewomen to just three shots in the second half as the Bears held on for the victory.
Bledsoe made two saves in the opening 45 minutes before giving way to fellow senior MC Barrett (Ithaca, N.Y.), who made one stop and earned the victory. Senior Mika Siegelman (Piedmont, Calif.) led the way with five shots in the contest. Brown outshot the Minutewomen, 13-9, and held an edge in corners, 4-3.
