Women’s Soccer Opens Season with 3-0 Win at St. John’s

QUEENS, NY – Junior Louisa Pitney (Washington, DC) and sophomore Chloe Cross (Seattle, WA) scored goals 2:19 apart midway through the first half to help propel the Brown women's soccer team (1-0-0) to a 3-0 victory over St. John's (2-3-0) in its 2012 season opener at Belson Stadium. Pitney also assisted Cross' goal to finish the night with three points, while junior goalie MC Barrett (Ithaca, NY) came up big in goal with seven second-half saves to help preserve the shutout.

The Bears came out firing, outshooting St. John's, 7-1, during the first 19 minutes of play. With the Red Storm attempting to clear the zone in the 23rd minute, Pitney corralled the ball off her chest and buried her shot into the top of the net, giving Brown a 1-0 lead at 22:27.

Less than three minutes later, Cross was the recipient of a threaded pass from Pitney, and the sophomore raced in on a breakaway, hitting the top of the net for her first of the year.

After getting doubled up in shots during the opening period, 12-6, including a 5-1 margin in shots on goal, St. John's flipped the script on the Bears in the second half, outshooting Brown, 13-11, during the final frame, including a 7-5 margin in shots on goal. However, the Bears would close out the scoring with just 3:49 left in regulation on senior Eliza Marshall's (North Andover, MA) first goal of the year. Junior Alison Mullin (Boulder, CO) started the play when she passed up the right side to Marshall, who found the back of the net to account for the 3-0 final.

In all, Brown edged St. John's in shots, 23-19, and held a 10-8 advantage in shots on goal. St. John's edged Brown in corner kicks, 5-4.

Junior Amber Bledsoe (Cincinnati, OH) earned the start in net and recorded one save to pick up the win, before giving way to Barrett, who stopped all seven shots she faced in the second half, as Brown posted its first shutout of the season.

Several members of the class of 2016 made their collegiate debuts tonight, including Sarah Moody (Palos Verdes, CA), who earned a start. Joining Moody in making their debuts were Hogan Vivier (Cumberland, RI), Erin Katz (Montomery, AL), and Charlotte Beach (New Haven, CT).

The Bears continue action on Sunday, September 2, when they host New Hampshire in a 4:30 p.m. contest at Stevenson Field.
