Bears Win 10th of the Year on Goals by Marshall & Ohrt and Four Saves by Barrett

ITHACA, NY – The Brown women's soccer team (10-4-1, 3-2-0) scored a pair of first half goals and sophomore MC Barrett (Ithaca, NY) made three of her four saves in the final 45 minutes, as the Bears held on for a 2-1 win over Cornell (2-11-1, 0-4-1) on Sunday afternoon. Junior Eliza Marshall (North Andover, MA) scored for the second straight game, while earning her fourth goal in as many games.

With Cornell celebrating senior day, the Bears struck early, as Marshall gave Brown a 1-0 lead just 7:31 into the game. Barrett started the play when she scooped up the ball inside the box and rolled it out to senior Gloria Chun (Irvine, CA) on the right side. Chun took a few strides up the sideline, before sending a long ball into the Cornell box. Marshall met the ball on the right side and touched it past the charging Big Red goalie, before firing it into the net for her sixth of the year.

Cornell appeared to have tied the game at 1-1 in the 30th minute when Kerry Schubert took a shot from the top of the box that deflected into the net off Xandra Hompe. However, the referee had ruled the play offsides, negating the goal.

Less than two minutes later, the Bears doubled their lead on junior Diana Ohrt's (Simi Valley, CA) first goal of the season. After a corner kick taken by sophomore Maddie Wiener (Seattle, WA) was headed out of the box by a Cornell defender, it came right to Ohrt about 20 yards out. Ohrt had time and space, before firing the ball inside the right post, giving Brown a 2-0 lead at 31:54.

Cornell had a chance to get on the board in the 49th minute, but Hompe's penalty kick was saved by Barrett, who dove to her right and punched the ball away.

Cornell, which outshot Brown, 7-5, in the second half, solved Barrett at 69:07 when Schubert connected on a rebound of a shot from Maneesha Chitanvis. Chitanvis' shot was initially saved by Barrett, before it rang off the post and fell right to Schubert just inches off the goal line.

For the game, the two teams were even in shots, 9-9, while Cornell edged Brown in shots on goal, 5-4. The Big Red also had four corners to Brown's one. Barrett finished with four saves, while Cornell's Megan Bartlett and Kelly Murphy combined for two saves.

Brown returns to action next Saturday, October 29, when it hosts Penn in a 4:00 p.m. contest. The game is the last one of the season to be played on Stevenson Field, as the Bears will recognize its six seniors – captain Sarah Hebert-Seropian (Vaudreuil-Dorion, QUE), Allison Kagawa (Mililani, HI), Marybeth Lesbirel (Holmdel, NJ), Joanna Price (San Juan Capistrano, CA), Carly Ruiz (Costa Mesa, CA), and Chun.
