Marshall Lifts Bears to 1-0 Win over Holy Cross

WORCESTER, MA – Junior leading scorer Eliza Marshall (North Andover, MA) scored her fifth goal of the year, and third in three games, in the 54th minute to break a scoreless tie and lift the Brown women's soccer team (9-4-1) to a 1-0 victory over Holy Cross (2-11-2) on Tuesday evening in Worcester. The victory assures the Bears of a winning season for the second consecutive year.

The Bears outshot Holy Cross, 5-2, in the opening half, but Crusaders' Ashlyn Angell stopped all five shots to keep the game scoreless through 45 minutes.

At the other end of the field, Brown sophomore MC Barrett (Ithaca, NY), who started for the first time in her career, recorded one save in the first half.

Marshall's game-winner came after senior Marybeth Lesbirel (Holmdel, NJ) played a loose ball over a crowd of people. Marshall beat a Holy Cross player to the ball and chipped the ball into the net from about 20 yards out at 53:18.

Holy Cross had a chance to tie the score in the 67th minute when Liz Early took a hard shot on net. But Barrett dove to her left and stopped the shot, one of two second-half saves, to help preserve the lead.

Overall, Brown outshot Holy Cross, 12-4, and earned eight corner kicks to one for the Crusaders. Angell finished with 10 saves, as only one of the Bears' 12 shots missed the net. Barrett played her first career complete game and earned her first career shutout, Brown's sixth of the season, with three saves.

Having played their last non-league game of the season, the Bears return to action on Sunday, October 23, when they travel to Ithaca, NY to face Cornell in a 3:00 p.m. contest.
