Bears Earn 1-0 Win over in-State Rival Rhode Island on Wingrove’s First Career Goal
KINGSTON, RI – Sophomore Emily Wingrove (Westwood, MA) scored her first career goal in the 76th minute to break a 0-0 deadlock and help lift the Brown women's soccer team (6-2-1) to a 1-0 victory over in-state rival URI (5-4-1) on Wednesday evening in Kingston. The victory is Brown's second in a row and marks the fifth shutout of the year for the Bears.
Wingrove's goal came on the first solid opportunity for either team in the second half, as the majority of the game was played between the 18s. The Bears worked the ball up the field and sophomore Mika Siegelman (Piedmont, CA) sent a through ball ahead for Wingrove on the left. Wingrove passed the ball to freshman Briel Crespi (Berkley, MA) in the middle, who sent it over to sophomore Louisa Pitney (Washington, DC) on the right side. After working around her defender, Pitney crossed the ball back into the box, and Wingrove headed it over URI's Ashley Harris and into the center of the net for what would prove to be the game-winner.
Neither goalie was tested after the game-winner as Brown had a pair of shots in the final 10 minutes go wide of the net and URI had two shots of its own miss the net in the final 10 minutes, as the Bears held on for the win.
The Rams outshot Brown, 6-5, in the opening half and 12-11 for the game, but one of the best chances of the night was a point-blank shot by Brown sophomore Kiersten Berg (Salt Lake City, UT). Her shot from the left side was stopped by a diving Harris and the URI defense was able to deflect her follow up attempt away from the goal, as the teams were knotted at zero until Wingrove's game-winner.
The Bears continue action on Saturday, October 1, when they travel to Columbia for a 7:00 p.m. Ivy League contest.
