PROVIDENCE, RI – Following three straight road games to open the 2010 season, the Brown women's soccer team (2-2-0) put forth a great showing for its home opener, scoring a 2-1 upset over #22 and previously undefeated Monmouth (4-1-0) on Saturday afternoon at Stevenson Field. Rookie forward Kiersten Berg (Salt Lake City, UT) led Brown with the first two goals of her career, while the Bears' defense withstood 22 shots and 10 corner kicks from the Monmouth attack en route to the win.
The two teams battled shot for shot throughout the first 10 minutes of the game and after a 10 minute stretch of back-and-forth action in the midfield, Monmouth turned up the intensity towards the middle part of the half. It was during this time that the Hawks began to generate several chances on the attack, outshooting Brown, 4-0 and earning three corners to Brown's none from the 22:06 mark to the 36:44 mark, when freshman Louisa Pitney (Washington, DC) nearly beat Monmouth's Lia Fierro with a high shot from about 25 yards out.
Pitney's attempt sparked the Bears for the final eight minutes of the half. Brown became more dangerous with every offensive possession and the Bears' hard work was rewarded with 18 seconds left in the half when Berg tallied her first career goal.
After the ball came to freshman Alison Mullin (Lafayette, CO) on the right side, she lofted a high shot from 35 yards out that Fierro was able to deflect off the cross bar. However, the Hawks' goalie couldn't corral the rebound and Berg got to it first, chipping it over Fierro's head for the 1-0 lead.
Brown kept the pressure on during the opening 15 minutes of the second half and Berg doubled Brown's lead when she put away a perfect through-ball from senior Gina Walker (Canyon Country, CA). After collecting the ball in the middle, Berg split a pair of Monmouth defenders, raced behind them and placed her shot to Fierro's left for the 2-0 lead at 56:09.
After a series of three saves in a row by Fierro around the 60th minute of play, Monmouth finally caught a break when Mary Wilks took a Tracey Biederstadt pass in the middle and beat freshman MC Barrett (Ithaca, NY) one-on-one with a shot to the left corner at 62:42.
Following the goal, Monmouth continued to press for the equalizer, outshooting Brown 7-0 over the next 22 minutes and 8-1 during the remainder of the half, while also earning six corners. However, Barrett made two of her four saves during this time and grabbed countless crosses to help hold the score at 2-1.
Barrett, who played the second half in the Brown net, picked up her first win of the season in goal, while starting goalie Amber Bledsoe (Withamsville, OH) stopped all three shots she faced during the opening 45 minutes.
The Bears return to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to West Point, NY to face in the Army Black Knights in a 4:30 p.m. contest.
