CHESTNUT HILL, MA – The Brown women's soccer team (1-2-0) faced a tough Boston College (4-0-1) squad on Wednesday evening, falling to the fifth-ranked Eagles, 4-1. With a late goal by senior Gina Walker (Canyon Country, CA), the Bears avoided a shutout, and became just the second team this season to score a goal against BC, which has outscored its opposition, 14-2 in its first five games.
Things did not start well for the Bears, who fell behind, 1-0, just 1:32 into the game on the first of three goals in a row from Victoria DiMartino. DiMartino increased BC's lead to 2-0 in the 33rd minute of play, as Boston College held a 2-0 lead at halftime, while outshooting Brown 10-2 for the half.
DiMartino went back to work in the second half, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead at 55:31. Just a minute later, at 56:37, Kristie Mewis put BC up, 4-0, which is how the score remained until Walker's goal with 1:03 left to play.
For the game, BC held a 17-7 advantage in shots, while Brown held a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior Carly Ruiz (Costa Mesa, CA) and senior Erika Lum (Hawaii-Kai, HI) paced Brown with two shots each. The freshmen goaltending duo of Amber Bledsoe (Withamsville, OH) and MC Barrett (Ithaca, NY) combined for five saves, with Bledsoe stopping three, each allowing two goals.
After three straight road games to open the season, the Bears
return to action this Saturday, September 11, when they host
Monmouth in their 2010 home opener. Game time is set for 2:00
