Stone's Goal in Final Minutes Lifts Women's Soccer to 1-0 Victory at Cornell
ITHACA, NY - Junior Sylvia Stone (Bronx, NY) scored the game-winning goal with 5:24 remaining in the game to lift the Brown women's soccer team (5-7-1, 2-3-0) to a 1-0 Ivy League victory over Cornell (1-11-1, 0-5-0) on Sunday afternoon in Ithaca.
The Bears dominated the game throughout, outshooting Cornell, 11-4, and earning a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. However, it took until the 85th minute of play and all 11 shots to find the back of the net. Cornell goalie Megan Barlett made two saves for the Big Red, and Stone's goal came on what would be the final shot of the game.
After junior Gina Walker's (Canyon Country, CA) initial shot was blocked by a Big Red defender, the rebound came out to Stone, who buried her 12-yard shot, beating Bartlett to the low left corner for the golden goal.
Stone was one of four Bears to post a game-high two shots, with Walker, sophomore Carly Ruiz (Costa Mesa, CA), and junior Joyce Chun (Irvine, CA) also helping to lead Brown's offense with two shots each.
Senior Brenna Hogue (Concord, CA) made one save in the first half, while senior Steffi Yellin (Savannah, GA) earned the victory with one save in the second half, as the duo combined to post Brown's fourth shutout of the year.
The Bears continue action on Saturday, October 31, when they host Penn in a 3:00 p.m. Ivy contest, Brown's final home game of the 2009 season.
