Kim and Lesbirel each Post a Goal and an Assist to Lead Bears Past URI, 3-2
KINGSTON, RI - Senior Melissa Kim (Bethesda, MD) and sophomore Marybeth Lesbirel (Holmdel, NJ) each tallied a goal and an assist, while junior Joyce Chun (Irvine, CA) scored her third game-winning goal of the season, to lead the Brown women's soccer team (4-6-0) to a 3-2 victory over in-state rival URI (4-9-1) on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bears grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when Lesbirel converted a Kim cross from the left side for her first goal of the year.
However, URI would tie the game before halftime, as Stephanie Santos dribbled through the Bears' defense and beat senior Brenna Hogue (Concord, CA) with a point-blank shot at 33:22.
Brown regained the lead 10 minutes after the break, when Lesbirel returned the favor for Kim, who nailed her shot from 15 yards out on the left side for her second goal of the season.
The Rams came back to tie the game again, when Kassandra Spitler beat senior Steffi Yellin (Savannah, GA) with a 10-yard shot to the left side at 68:52.
Chun broke the tie for good in the 89th minute, beating Brooke Messier one-on-one in the box off a pass from junior Gina Walker (Canyon Country, CA). The goal was Chun's third game-winning goal this year, as she has also scored the deciding goal in 1-0 victories over both Army and Columbia. All three of her game-winners have come in the final 11-minutes of the game.
URI held a 13-12 advantage in shots, including a 7-4 edge in shots on-goal. Hogue made three saves in the first half, while Yellin recorded two saves in the second and earned the win. In the midst of a four-game road swing, Brown returns to action this Saturday when it travels to Harvard to face the Crimson in an 11:00 a.m. game.
