June 16, 2005

PROVIDENCE, RI - Former Brown women's lacrosse standout Debbie Mendel '04 (West Newton, MA) has been named to Team Canada for the upcoming World Cup. The 2005 World Cup will be held June 23-July 2 at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.

A former defender for Brown, Mendel was a four-year starter for the Bears. She was originally selected to the Canadian National Team in January of 2004 by virtue of a three-day tryout in Toronto, ONT. When she was originally named to the team, Mendel was one of 24 players selected, which included 12 members of the 2001 World Cup team, in which Canada took fourth, losing to England in the Bronze Medal game.

Mendel and Team Canada played in several events throughout 2004 and in the beginning of this year before the final team was named during the team's final training camp over the weekend of June 4th.

While not born in Canada, Mendel has dual citizenship with Canada and the United States because her father is Canadian, growing up in Montreal. Her family still lives in Montreal.
