Providence, RI - The Brown women's lacrosse team (6-8, 2-5) gave top-ranked Princeton (16-0, 7-0) all it could handle in a 5-4 loss on Saturday afternoon at Stevenson Field. The Bears nearly ruined the Tigers perfect season, leading 3-2 heading into the second half.
After nearly 11 scoreless minutes of action and strong defensive play by both teams, Princeton opened the 0-0 game on Lindsay Biles' first of four goals with 19:20 remaining in the half. Biles scored her second of the game just 3:10 later to increase the Tigers' lead to 2-0.
However, it was all Brown the rest of the half, as the Bears scored three unanswered goals in the final 11:07 to take a 3-2 at the end of the first stanza. Freshman Lydia Denkler (Alexandria, VA) scored first for Brown on a misplay by Princeton goalie Sarah Kolodner. With Kolodner behind the cage, senior Katie Russell (San Francisco, CA), who had beat Kolodner to a lose ground ball, fed Denkler in front of the empty net for Brown's first score of the game. At 11:07.
Freshman Jen Redd fed senior Christine Anneberg (Denver, CO) with 3:24 left in the half, who tied the game at 2-2 with a shot from outside the 12-meter. Another misplay by Kolodner with less than a minute remaining in the half gave junior Sarah Passano (Baltimore, MD) an open net for a 3-2 Brown lead with 52 seconds left before halftime. Sophomore Meg Sullivan (Garden City, NY) tallied an assist on the goal.
Princeton tied the game at 3-3 just 5:48 into the second half, and Biles gave the Tigers the lead for good with 18:05 left to play. Biles increased Princeton's lead to 5-3 with 7:41 remaining, but freshman Amie Biros (Bethesda, MD) put one more on the board for Brown with a free position goal at 56:52.
In net for Brown, junior Julia Southard (Manhasset, NY) made nine saves. The Bears continue action on Tuesday, May 4, when they host Boston College in a non-league game at 7:00 p.m.
