Bears Fall to #15 Penn, 8-6
April 23, 2005
Providence, RI - The Brown University women's lacrosse team (3-9, 1-9) dropped an 8-6 decision to #15 Penn on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Stevenson Field.
The Quakers broke the 0-0 tie at 4:37 of the first half, and then after nearly seven minutes of scoreless action, took a 2-0 lead at 11:46.
Brown responded with back-to-back goals from sophomore Amie Biros (Bethesda, MD) and junior Kate Staley (Needham, MA) less than two minutes apart to knot the game at 2-2 with 11:24 remaining in the half, but Penn netted two more goals to re-gain the two goal cushion, taking a 4-2 lead at the 21:45 mark.
Senior Sarah Passano (Baltimore, MD) brought the Bears to within one, 4-3, off a feed from Biros at 25:13, but Penn won the ensuing draw control and went up by two again, 5-3, just 23 seconds later.
A goal from junior Ashley Holden (Alexandria, VA), off a feed from freshman Justine Lupo (Ridgewood, NJ) again brought the Bears to within one, 5-4, with 1:46 left to play before halftime, but the Quakers pushed the lead to two goals for the third time with 1:10 remaining to take a 6-4 lead into the break.
Neither team could find the back of the net for the first 10:15 of the second half, and Biros' second of the game, off a pass from junior Lindsey Glennon (Exeter, NH) closed Penn's lead to 6-5. However, Emily Cochran, who led all goal scorers with three tallies, scored two straight for the Quakers in a span of 36 seconds to give Penn its largest lead of the game, 8-5.
Biros connected with Passano for her second goal of the contest with under 10 minutes to play, but Brown could not get any closer before the final whistle.
Senior Julia Southard (Manhasset, NY) stood strong in net, posting 13 saves as Brown was outshot, 31-17.
The Bears continue action Saturday, April 30, when they travel to Princeton to take on the Tigers in a 3:00 p.m. game. It is the final road game of the season, as Brown will play its last two matches in Providence.
