Box Score

PROVIDENCE, RI - Cornell's Katherine Simmons scored just eight seconds into the game, tying an NCAA record for fastest goal to start a contest, sparking a 7-0 Big Red (6-4, 3-2) run to open the contest as Cornell earned a 17-9 victory over the Brown women's lacrosse team (5-6, 2-2) on Friday evening at Stevenson Field.

Cornell scored seven times in the opening 9:53, winning the first four draw controls of the game, and limiting Brown to just two shots, both of which were saved, during this time. The Bears finally got on the board at 11:30 when junior Jesse Nunn (Worton, MD) connected on a free position shot, scoring her first of four goals. Senior Justine Lupo (Ridgewood, NJ) scored on another free position shot 56 seconds later to cut the deficit to 7-2, but Libby Johnson's third of the game gave Cornell an 8-2 lead with 15:16 remaining in the half.

Lupo and junior Kelly Robinson (Marlton, NJ) would close out the scoring for Brown in the first half to make it an 8-4 game heading into the final 30 minutes.

The Big Red opened the second half just as they did the first, scoring six times in the opening 7:22 to take a 14-4 lead with 22:38 remaining. Brown would outscore Cornell, 5-3, during the final 22:38, but the damage had already been done as the Big Red cruised to the victory.

Lupo's third of the game at 8:58 halted Cornell's run, but Deirdre Lafferty responded exactly two minutes later to push the lead to 10 goals again. After nearly 10 minutes of scoreless action, Nunn scored back-to-back goals 1:55 apart to make it a 15-7 game with 2:01 remaining. Her first was assisted by sophomore Molly McCarthy (Scituate, MA) and her second, which she scored from her knees, was assisted by junior Lauren Vitkus (Skaneateles, NY).

McCarthy then scored on a free position shot at 23:48 and Nunn capped off a beautiful transition run by sophomore Kiki Manners (North Potomac, MD) at 26:24 to bring Brown to within 15-9, but that was as close as the Bears would get, as Cornell scored the final two goals of the game for the 17-9 final.

Freshman Alexa Caldwell (Middletown, DE) and Manners led Brown with three ground balls each, while Vitkus and Lupo led the Bears with four and three draw controls, respectively. Manners also had a team-high three caused turnovers.

Senior Melissa King (Pepper Pike, OH) recorded seven saves in 42:41, while freshman Maggie Suprey (South Boston, MA) made two saves in her first career appearance.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, April 16, when they travel to Yale for a 5:00 p.m. contest.
