Providence, RI- The Brown women's lacrosse team improved to 3-5 on the season and 2-1 in the Ivy League on Friday afternoon, defeating Columbia (4-7, 0-5), 13-6, in a game played at Warner Roof. The Bears were led by sophomore Sarah Passano (Baltimore, MD) and senior Jocelyn Moore (Washington, DC), who each netted three goals.
The Bears took a quick 1-0 lead just 22 seconds into the game on a goal by junior Christine Anneberg (Denver, CO), and never looked back, scoring five straight goals before the Lions got on the board. In that span, freshmen Ashley Holden (Alexandria, VA) and Kate Staley (Needham, MA), junior Laurel Pierpont (Jacksonville, FL), and Passano each tallied for Brown, giving the Bears a 5-0 lead at 13:32 of the first half.
Liz Gilroy and Molly Friedensohn scored for the Lions just 40 seconds apart, cutting Brown's lead to 5-2, but Passano, Moore, and junior Debbie Mendel (West Newton, MA) each scored for the Bears as Brown held onto an 8-2 lead with 5:23 remaining in the half. The two teams traded goals to end the half on a goal by Brown sophomore Kierstan Carlson (Medford Lakes, NJ), giving the Bears a 9-3 lead heading into the break.
It took the two teams nearly 10 minutes to score in the second half as the rain-soaked field caused unforced errors on both ends. Brown broke the scoring drought on another goal by Anneberg, and increased its lead to 12-3 on back-to-back goals by Moore. Columbia once-again closed in on the lead, scoring two goals, at 44:21 and at 48:16, but Passano added Brown's final tally just 41 seconds later. The Lions struck once more before the final whistle, on a goal by Adie Moll, who led Columbia with two goals and one assist.
In net, sophomore Julia Southard (Manhasset, NY) made 8 saves for Brown, while Marcela Calidonio stopped six shots for the Lions. The Bears continue action on Sunday April 13, hosting Boston University at 3:00 p.m.
