Providence, RI - The Brown women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the 2003 season on Wednesday night, defeating Harvard 7-5. The Bears are now 1-2 overall and 1-0 in Ivy League play. The Bears took a quick 1-0 lead at the 1:30 mark and held on to the lead for the rest of the way. Leading the way for Brown was junior Christine Anneberg (Denver, CO) with two goals and an assist. Sophomore Sarah Passano (Baltimore, MD) also added two goals for the Bears.
Anneberg got the scoring started for Brown with freshman Kate Staley (Needham, MA) earning the assist at the 1:30 mark. The Bears increased their lead to 2-0 at the 5:46 mark when junior Katie Russell (San Francisco, CA) scored from junior Laurel Pierpont (Jacksonville, FL).
Harvard scored its first goal of the night less then two minutes later but Brown quickly answered to make the score 3-1. Passano scored her first goal of the night unassisted. The Crimson cut the lead to one at the 11:10 mark but senior Maggie Connolly pushed the lead back to two with just under 13 minutes remaining in the first half. Harvard scored at the 18:50 mark for a halftime score of 4-3.
Anneberg tallied her second goal of the game to give the Bears a 5-3 lead five minutes into the second half. Once again Harvard answered with a goal of its own at the 9:37 mark but the Bears retaliated 1:26 later when Pierpont found the back of the net to make the scored 6-4.
The Crimson came within one midway through the half but failed to get the tying goal on the board. Brown sealed the victory when it scored with less then three minutes remaining in the game to take the win 7-5. Passano recorded her second goal of the game from senior Bekah Rottenberg (Colrain, MA).
In goal, sophomore Julia Southard made 14 saves.
Brown continues action on Sunday Mar. 23 at Stanford at 4:00 p.m.
