PROVIDENCE, RI - Sophomore Bethany Buzzell (Middletown, MD) scored on a free position shot with 14:42 remaining to bring Brown to within 7-6, but UNH (2-3) outscored the Bears (1-5) 2-1 the rest of the way to earn a 9-7 win in women's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon. Brown was led by junior Mimi DeTolla (Stony Brook, NY), who scored four goals and assisted two others.
After UNH scored back-to-back goals to open the game, DeTolla got Brown on the board at 19:11 with her first goal. The Wildcats answered less than four minutes later to take a 3-1 lead, but freshman Meghan Markowski (Northport, NY) got one back at 14:29 off a pass from DeTolla to cut New Hampshire's lead to 3-2.
The Wildcats scored the final two goals of the first half to earn a 5-2 lead at the break. DeTolla connected on a free position shot to open the second half and after Ashley Durepo gave New Hampshire a 6-3 lead, DeTolla scored back-to-back goals 3:32 apart to bring the Bears to within 6-5 at 20:40.
However, UNH halted any momentum Brown had by tacking its seventh goal on the board at 18:28. Buzzell answered for the Bears, but UNH scored two unassisted goals at 12:23 and 9:10 to regain a three-goal lead.
Sophomore Lauren Vitkus (Skaneateles, NY) tallied her fifth goal of the year with 5:29 remaining, but UNH was able to run the clock out and hold on for the win.
Defensively, Brown was led by sophomore Val Sherry (Baltimore, MD) and freshman Molly McCarthy (Scituate, MA) with three caused turnovers each. Freshman Kiki Manners (North Potomac, MD) led the Bears with three ground balls, while sophomore Kelly Robinson (Marlton, NJ) led Brown with four draw controls.
Junior Melissa King (Pepper Pike, OH) recorded eight saves in net for Brown. The Bears return to action on Saturday, March 24 when they host St. Mary's at 2:00 p.m.
