Springfield, MA - Sophomore Christine Anneberg (Denver, CO) scored four goals and added two assists, while senior Niki Caggiano (Freeport, NY) made 17 saves to lead Brown (1-0) to a 16-3 season-opening win over Colgate (1-3).
Anneberg gave Brown a 2-0 lead on back-to-back free position shots just 43 seconds apart to open the scoring for the Bears. Colgate got on the board at 10:20 of the first half, but Brown scored five unanswered goals to take a 7-1 lead at 18:45. In that spree, Anneberg tallied once, junior Jocelyn Moore (Washington, DC) twice, and sophomores Katie Russell (San Francisco, CA) and Laurel Pierpont (Jacksonville, FL) once.
The Raiders scored their final tally of the first half at the 19:00 mark, but junior Bekah Rottenberg (Colrain, MA) answered for Brown just 12 seconds later. Freshman Sarah Passano (Baltimore, MD) scored her first collegiate goal at 21:40 and added her second at 24:46, while sophomore Katie Zabel (Ellicott City, MD) closed the scoring in the first half with her first of the season with 55 seconds remaining, giving Brown an 11-2 lead at the break.
The second half was more of the same as Brown scored four unanswered goals to take a 15-2 lead at 20:16 of the second half. The two teams traded goals to end the game, giving Brown their first win of the season.
Caggiano gave way to junior Randi Macdonald (Baltimore, MD) with 11 minutes left in the game and Macdonald made three saves for a team total of 20.
The Bears continue action on Saturday, when they host Maryland in their home opener. Game time is 1:00 p.m. at Stevenson Field.
