Bears Edge Sacred Heart, 13-12, in Overtime to Post First Victory of the Season

FAIRFIELD, CT - Sophomore Jesse Nunn (Worton, MD) scored her first career goal with 1:46 left in overtime to lift the Brown women's lacrosse team (1-1) to a 13-12 win over Sacred Heart on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Bethany Buzzell (Middletown, MD) and freshman Molly McCarthy (Scituate, MA) led all Brown scorers with three goals and an assist each, while sophomore Lauren Vitkus (Skaneateles, NY) also had three goals.

The two teams traded goals during the first 10:47 of play as Vitkus and Buzzell each scored for the Bears with Buzzell's goal at 19:13 tying the game at 2-2. Buzzell gave the Bears a 3-2 lead at 15:50 and just 24 seconds later at 15:16, freshman Meghan Markowski (Northport, NY) increased Brown's lead to 4-2 with her first career goal.

Sacred Heart answered with back-to-back goals at 13:26 and 7:09 to tie the score at 4-4, but Buzzell, McCarthy, and Vitkus each scored in a 3-1 Brown run to close the first half.

The Pioneers opened the second half with two more goals to tie the game at 7-7. After a scored by junior Mimi DeTolla (Stony Brook, NY) gave Brown an 8-7 lead, Sacred Heart again answered to keep the score close, 8-8 with 24:46 remaining.

McCarthy scored back-to-back goals just 40 seconds apart to give Brown a 10-8 lead with 18:33, but Sacred Heart goals at 8:43, 5:42, and 2:04 gave the home team an 11-10 lead. Vitkus tied it at 11-11, converting a free position shot with 1:15 remaining to send the game into overtime.

Brown struck first in the six minute period with Markowski converting a feed from freshman Kiki Manners (North Potomac, MD) just 1:18 in. Sacred Heart answered 56 seconds later, but Nunn netted her first career goal off an assist from Buzzell with 1:46 remaining, lifting Brown to the win.

Junior Melissa King (Pepper Pike, OH) stopped three shots in net for Brown. The Bears return to action on Sunday, March 4, when they travel to Stony Brook to face the Seawolves in a 2:00 p.m. game.
