Women's Laxers Open 2003 Season 11-10 Loss to Northwestern

Cambridge, MA - The women's lacrosse team dropped a close 11-10 decision to Northwestern to open the 2003 season in a game played at Harvard's Jordan Field. Junior Laurel Pierpont (Jacksonville, FL) led the way with two goals and two assists, while junior Christine Anneberg (Denver, CO) and sophomore Sarah Passano (Baltimore, MD) each pitched in two goals.

The two teams traded goals over the first nine minutes of the game with the Bears taking a 1-0 lead before Northwestern scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead just 7:38 into the game. However, Brown responded with two unanswered goals of its own, knoting the game with 20:55 remaining in the first half. The Bears opened up the second half strong, with two goals in the first 15 minutes and another with 11:47 left to play, taking a 10-9 lead. However, the Wildcats tallied the equalizer with 10:10 left to play, and netted the game-winner with under six minutes remaining.

Sophomore Laura Tilghman (Bethesda, MD), junior Emily Blanton (Shaker Heights, OH), junior Katie Russell (San Francisco, CA), and senior Bekah Rottenberg (Colrain, MA) scored the other four goals for Brown. Senior Jocelyn Moore (Washington, DC), senior Whitney Talbot (New Canaan, CT), and junior Debbie Mendel (West Newton, MA) added assists.

In net, sophomore Julia Southard (Manhasset, NY) made her first collegiate start for the Bears and stopped nine shots.

The Bears continue action on Sunday, March 9, when they host Notre Dame in a 1:00 p.m. contest at Stevenson Field.
