Women’s Lacrosse Defeated by San Diego State, 13-8

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Brown women's lacrosse team was defeated by San Diego State, 13-8, at Aztec Lacrosse Field on Friday night. The loss moves the Bears to 4-6 on the season while the Aztecs improve to 8-3.

San Diego State opened the first half with a quick goal by Natalie Peel at 29:25 to take an early 1-0 advantage. The two teams traded offensive chances until sophomore Grace Plassche (Clinton, N.J.) scored her eighth goal of the season, a free position strike, at 15:50 to knot the contest, 1-1.  

The Aztecs next jumped out to a 6-1 lead with five-straight goals, including two by Ijeoma Ikpe. Sophomore Zoe Verni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) halted SDSU's run with her 14th tally of the season at 2:03 and brought an end to the scoring in the stanza.

Freshman Maggie Bigelow (Montclair, N.J.) got her first-career start in goal and made nine saves in the first frame while Katrina Reeves made six stops for SDSU.

The Bears went 1-for-2 in free positions shots for the period while the Aztecs were 1-for-3. SDSU held a 16-14 edge in shots and a 6-3 lead in draw controls.

SDSU scored the first goal of the second at 26:32 with a free position shot. The Aztecs gained an 8-2 lead with another free position score at 24:45 before sophomore Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) registered her 20th goal of the season to get the Bears back on the board (23:46) and start a 3-0 run. Freshman Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) added the next goal for Brown at 22:29 and junior Bri Irons (Wallingford, Pa.) netted a man-up tally at 19:25 to pull the Bears within three (8-5).

Ikpe's third goal of the game came at 14:57 to close Brown's run and Kristen Hickey's tally at 14:29 doubled up the Bears, 10-5.

Sophomore Carolyn Paletta (Greenwich, Conn.) next scored her 21st goal of the season at 14:18 before SDSU rattled off two straight from Alex Watson (12:17, 10:54) to claim a 12-6 lead.

The Bears would not go away as Moinuddin put in her second score of the day at 4:56 on a man-up opportunity and Verni also followed with her second (free position goal) at 4:03 to reduce the Aztec lead to four (12-8).

Both team's traded possessions until SDSU locked up the game with a goal with 1:07 remaining to take the win, 13-8.

Bigelow added three saves in the second to reach a career-high 12 for the game while Reeves posted eight saves in the second for a total of 14 in the contest.

Brown's offense stepped up in the second period and outshot SDSU 17-12. The Bears also had the draw controls lead in the half at 9-5. Brown was 1-for-1 in the second on free position shots while SDSU was 2-for-3.

Moinuddin and Verni both finished with two goals apiece for Brown while Ikpe led SDSU with three goals and two assists.

The Bears will next resume Ivy League play and head to Cornell to face the Big Red on Saturday, April 8 for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
