Second Half Comeback Falls Short as Women’s Lacrosse Defeated by No. 11/12 Princeton, 10-7

PRINCETON, N.J. – After trailing 5-1 after the first half, the Brown women's lacrosse team generated six goals in the second but No. 11/12 Princeton held off the Bears for a 10-7 win at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium on Saturday. Brown moves to 2-2 overall on the season and 0-1 in Ivy League play while Princeton improves to a perfect 4-0 on the year and 1-0 in conference action.

The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals by Anna Doherty (28:35) and Tess D'Orsi (28:05), respectively, 30 seconds apart. Camille Sullivan added Princeton's third goal at 22:32.

After a lull in the scoring, D'Orsi added her second goal of the game at 11:32 to give Princeton a 4-0 lead and Colby Chanenchuk later increased the Tigers' lead to five at 3:56 with a score.

Sophomore Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) halted the Princeton scoring at 1:07 with her team-leading 11th goal of the year.

Princeton finished the opening half with a 16-13 edge in shots while Brown led in draw controls, 4-3. Junior Mikaela Karlsson (Framingham, Mass.) saved six shots for the Bears while her counterpart Ellie DeGarmo made eight saves.

The Tigers started the second half with a score by Sullivan at 29:26 for a 6-1 advantage.

Monuddin put in her second tally of the game at 25:58 and sophomore Carolyn Paletta (Greenwich, Conn.) pulled the Bears within three (6-3) at 23:38 in transition. Soon after, Paletta scored her second straight to leave Brown trailing by just two at 20:30.

D'Orsi quickly answered for Princeton and scored her third goal of the contest at 20:14 to give Princeton a 7-4 lead at 20:14.

The Tigers tacked on two more, both free position goals, for a 9-4 lead before Paletta scored her third of the game, also on a free position, at 13:30. Sophomore Zoe Verni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) next got into the scoring column with a tally at 12:50 with the help of junior Emma Dahle (Wynnewood, Pa.). Freshman Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) then added a goal at 6:47 to pull Brown within two (9-7), with Verni recording the assist.

Sullivan then gave the Tigers a three-goal cushion (10-7) at 3:27 with her third goal of the game and Princeton's defense held off the Bears from any further scoring.

Brown outshot Princeton in the second half, 16-12, while both teams were even in draw controls with six wins apiece.

Karlsson concluded the game with a total of 10 saves, while DeGarmo tallied 12.

Brown will next return home to Stevenson-Pincince Field on Wednesday, March 8 and host Bryant in the Ocean State Cup game starting at 6:00 p.m.
