Hudgins Nets Five; Women's Lax Downs CCSU, 21-9

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Bre Hudgins (Syracuse, N.Y.) netted five goals while Grace Healy (Bellport, N.Y) registered a hat trick as the Brown women's lacrosse team improved to 6-0 with a 21-9 victory over Central Connecticut State (2-4) on Saturday at Stevenson Field.

Danielle Mastro (Endicott, N.Y.) chipped in with two goals and three assists, improving on her team highs of 24 points and 12 assists.  Brown netminder Kellie Roddy (Poway, Calif.) improved to 6-0 as she turned aside two Blue Devils shots in 57:04 of action.

Amanda Toke led the Blue Devils with four goals and an assist while Morgan Tullar made eight stops to drop to 2-4 this season.

The Bears jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead just under three minutes into the game on goals from Hudgins, Janie Gion (Northfield, Ill.), and Kerianne Hunt (Alamo, Calif.).  Leading 4-1, CCSU responded with three straight markers from Falynn McCartney, Toke, and Madison Hughes to knot the game at four.

Ali Kim (Burlingame, Calif.) and Healy gave the Bears a two-goal cushion once again before Toke cut the deficit back to one with a free position goal at 13:26.  The teams held each other scoreless for nearly 10 minutes before a three-goal outburst from Brown, including two goals from freshman Natalie Fox (Mercer Island, Wash.), gave them a 9-5 lead at halftime.

Leading 11-5 after goals from Mastro and Lauren Toy (Kentfield, Calif.), the Blue Devils made things close with three consecutive strikes to cut the Bears' lead to 11-8.  That would be as close as CCSU would come on Saturday as Brown struck for seven unanswered goals over a five minute span to extend its lead to 18-8 with 8:28 to play.

Carolyn Westphal (Lancaster, Pa.) netted her first goal of the season while Dianne Vitkus (Skaneateles, N.Y.) and Sarah Nesi (Westport, Conn.) each struck for their second goals of the season to give the Bears their highest goal output since a 20-15 win over Quinnipiac on March 18, 2012.

Brown outshot the Blue Devils by a 38-14 margin and found success with draw controls, claiming 24-of-32 on the day.  Hudgins led the way with a career high eight draw controls while Hunt, Erin Roos (Wilmette, Ill.), and Riley Christopher (Bethesda, Md.) each caused two turnovers apiece.

The Bears will fly west to the Centennial State to battle Colorado and Denver next weekend.
