Hudgins Paces Women's Lax Over Columbia in Ivy Opener, 9-6

NEW YORK – The Brown women's lacrosse team got four goals and an assist from Bre Hudgins en route to a key 9-6 Ivy League victory over Columbia at Robert K. Kraft Field on Saturday.  With the win, the Bears improve to a perfect 3-0 (1-0 Ivy) record this season and 17-0 in the all-time series, while Columbia falls to 1-1 (0-1 Ivy).

Despite winning only 2-of-7 draw controls in the opening 30 minutes, the Bears were able to quell a Lions attack, holding them to just two markers in the first half.  Hudgins (Syracuse, N.Y.) opened the game with a natural hat trick in the first 11 minutes, netting her third tally on a feed from Danielle Mastro (Endicott, N.Y.) at the 19:11 mark.  Lauren Toy (Kentfield, Calif.) notched her seventh goal of the season off a free position shot to put Brown up 4-0.

The Lions responded with back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to two as Taylor Quinn and Paige Cuscovitch found the back of the net past Kellie Roddy (Poway, Calif.).  Roddy was solid between the pipes for Brown on Saturday, as she surrendered six goals while turning away 12 Lions shots to improve to 3-0 this season.

Brown extended its lead early in the second half as Mastro connected on her sixth marker of the season before Toy's second of the game gave Brown a 6-2 advantage.  The Lions drew within two on two separate occasions on goals from Cuscovitch, but answers from Janie Gion (Northfield, Ill.), Grace Healy (Bellport, N.Y.), and Hudgins gave the Bears a lead they would not relinquish at 9-5.

Cuscovitch added her fourth strike of the game off a free position shot with 21 seconds to play, but it wasn't enough as Brown secured its first Ivy win of the season, 9-6.

The Bears will return home to face No. 18/19 Princeton next Saturday on Stevenson Field at 1 p.m.
