Bears Comeback Spoiled by BC’s Second-Half Run, as Brown Falls to #19 Eagles, 15-12
PROVIDENCE, RI – After spotting visiting Boston College (9-6) a 4-1 lead in the game's opening 4:25, the Brown women's lacrosse team (9-4) clawed its way back into the contest, eventually tying the score at 8-8 on junior Bre Hudgins' (Syracuse, NY) first goal of the afternoon six minutes into the second half. The 19th-ranked Eagles responded by scoring four unanswered goals in a span of 12 minutes and the Bears could never get closer than two goals, falling to their second straight ranked opponent.
Senior Lindsay Minges (Rochester, NY) led the Bears with four goals, while Hudgins and sophomore Abby Bunting (Wellesley, MA) both recorded two goals and an assist. Senior Kasey Wagner (Southborough, MA) and junior Danielle Mastro (Endicott, NY) each also scored a pair.
The Eagles raced out to a 2-0 lead just 1:03 into the contest, before Minges' first of the afternoon got Brown on the board at 2:49. Boston College found the back of the net two more times in less than two minutes, but Minges' second of the game with 17:57 on the clock brought the Bears to within 4-2.
The two teams traded goals over the next 11 minutes with every Boston College goal being answered by a Brown goal, Bunting's first goal brought the Bears to within 7-5 with 6:30 left before halftime. Bunting scored her second in a row with just 48 seconds remaining in the half to close the gap to a single goal at the break.
BC's Covie Stanwick, who led all scorers with six points, gave her team an 8-6 lead 4:31 into the second half with the Eagles enjoying a player advantage. However, Hudgins figured into back-to-back Brown goals in a span of 39 seconds, assisting Mastro's second of the game and then scoring her first of the day, to tie the score at 8-8 with 23:57 remaining.
Stanwick assisted a goal by Caroline Margolis just 33 seconds after Hudgins' goal, igniting a 4-0 run for the Eagles that spanned the next 12 minutes, as Kara Magley's goal with 11:06 left in the game gave Boston College a 12-8 lead.
Wagner and Hudgins halted BC's momentum, scoring consecutive goals for the Bears just 28 seconds apart to bring Brown to within 12-10. However, back-to-back goals by Stanwick and Cali Ceglarski pushed the Eagles' lead back to four goals with 2:27 remaining.
Minges scored her third and fourth goals of the afternoon during the final 92 seconds, sandwiched around a BC score, to account for the 15-12 final.
Junior Erin Roos (Wilmette, IL) led Brown's defense with two ground balls, two draw controls and three caused turnovers, while Hudgins led Brown with a game-high five draw controls and junior Grace Healy (Bellport, NY) added three.
Overall, the Bears won 15 draw controls to BC's 13. Boston College edged Brown in both caused turnovers (5-4) and ground balls (10-6), while each team took 24 shots.
Roddy finished with four saves in 43:28, before giving way to freshman Victoria Holland (Huntington, NY), who played the final 16:32.
